Hiring a Tower Crane inspector requires time, a sense of responsibility, and a dedication to safety on the part of the contractor/owner. As with any crane that you need inspected, it is your responsibility to seek the best, and most qualified inspector possible. You need to be confident that when the inspector leaves your site, your crane is safe and fit for duty. Ultimately you are the responsible party if something should go a-miss. You need to know that you have done everything possible to make make your crane and worksite safe.

These are some tips that will help you find a qualified Crane Inspector.

  • Check the inspector’s resume for his qualifications, how many years has he/she been inspecting cranes?
  • Does he/she have insurance?
  • Ask to see his/her forms, are they just check off lists?
  • Ask him/her how long it takes to inspect a crane properly.
  • Does he/she involve the crane operator, and give him tips for his daily inspections to help him keep his crane in safe running condition?
  • Does he/she have a lap top computer so that he/she may be able to show you standards if there should happen to be a deficiency?

These are all ways that will help owners and contractors avoid hiring an inspector that is not qualified. Hiring an inspector to simply “rubber stamp” your cranes is dangerous, irresponsible, and is actually wasting you time money. Don’t say that it can’t happen to you! In my role as a professional Crane inspector and crane accident investigator I often how thorough and regular inspections can prevent accidents.
