Not everyone does a
proper crane inspection. Here are some
examples of bad inspections that led to accidents,
injuries and fatalities.
INSPECTION CRITERIA
 |
 |
|
Hooks should be examined to
see if they are cracked or distorted beyond allowable tolerances. Accurate measurement
should be taken for throat opening & tram the hook for accurate measurement in the
future. In doing so, movement in the hook can be caught before an accident occurs. Safety
latch should be in working order. Heavy painting on the hook and cheek plates will hide
small cracks. |
 |
 |
|
Accurate measurement of wire rope is a
B30.5 requirement. Special care should be taken when checking the wire rope on the
equalizer sheave that it does not move and that it picks every load without the cable
moving. |
Load blocks and whip ball
line should be sufficient weight to overhaul the line from the highest hook position for
all links of the boom. All hook and ball assemblies and load blocks shall be labeled with
their rated capacity and weight. |
 |
 |
|
Outrigger beams should be marked to
indicate when they are fully extended or mid-extended with warning decals. The outrigger
housing and beams should be checked for cracks and distortion. |
All hydraulic hoses,
fittings, swivels and tubing should be checked for fluid le akage. Hoses should be checked
for evidence of any rubbing and wear areas. |
 |
 |
|
Anti-skid should be on all
principle walkways. |
Manufacturer's operating
and maintenance manuals shall be with the machine. A durable load rating chart for the
specific model and serial number of the crane shall be accessible to the operator at his
or her operating or work station. All limitations, warnings, specifications and safety
data should be displayed. |
|
All controls shall be clearly identified as to their function. |
